Teacher Interview

We had the pleasure to share an interview with Ms. S, a teacher with ten years of experience this week. I found it to be a great discussion as she had enough experience to have some veteran advice, but still fresh enough to be trying new things and making adjustments. I noticed this as she spoke about how her original resume objective used to be an abstract goal about teaching aesthetics, but has now transformed into a very child-centric goal that embraces humanism. She seemed to be very comfortable in her role as an instructor and in working with both the school staff as well as the parents in the area. She stressed the importance of reaching out to families in particular, and provided multiple avenues for doing so.

Right off the bat she sends home a copy of her classroom rules to help set the expectations for the class. Organically, she said to utilize parent-teacher conferences as both a way to learn about the child as well as to help advocate for yourself. She used a fun example where she prompted a response from a child at a conference regarding what they had learned about graphic design/letterforming and serif vs. sans serif letters, and the child happily brought it up. That helps empower the child, but also showcases your productivity outside of just the projects the child brings home. She also was a strong advocate for utilizing social media as a tool to give the community a window into the fun activities and environment that you are creating.
