Practicum - Final Blog

Practicum season Spring 2021 has come to an end, and it feels like perhaps a little too quickly. It’s hard trying to jump into the middle of a class, find your bearings among the district and the students, and just when you think you’ve figured out how to make yourself useful have things cut short, but that’s the nature of the game. I certainly feel like I became more comfortable speaking and engaging with students, and am looking forward to a second practicum experience later on, but more-so I am looking forward to the official student teaching experience I should have at the end of my program.

I’m thankful for the funny memories I had working with students, and getting to see just how much they cared about their art projects and how much they enjoyed coming in to the art room every day. In just a narrow window of a few short weeks I can recall a dozen or so memorable interactions of students who were solving problems, joking with each-other, or admiring their work. These memories and experiences were one of my driving factors in pursuing the line of work, and getting to see it pay off this early felt gratifying.

I feel more prepared to work with a wider age-range of students. Where before I was confident that I would work with older students on more advanced and thoughtful projects, I realize now that there are trade-offs, and that I can enjoy working with energetic and enthusiastic elementary students as well.
